Gator Run Friday Focus - November 6, 2015

What an amazing visit this week from the principals and K and 1 teachers from our Sub-Cadre.  Thank you to all of the teachers whose rooms we visited.  The biggest compliments were for the rooms that we visited in which the students were responsible for their own learning.  In those rooms, teachers were either working with a small group of students while the other students were involved in meaningful independent work or the entire class was engaged in small groups or individually on their assignments while the teacher circulated throughout the room, providing feedback and asking questions.

I understand that my views on homework are not shared by everyone and I respect that.  To me homework seems to be one of those aspects of school that we perpetuate because "that's the way it's always been done".  I do believe that there can be some meaningful homework, but when we start infiltrating on time that children can and should be spending on family and outside interests to just give busy work, then we are wasting their time.  I'm also not a big fan of preparing them for the workload that they will receive in middle school.  So, because middle school provides an inordinate amount of homework and eats away at students' free time, we have to do the same?  In case you are interested in others who seem to agree with my viewpoints here are some articles on the subject:

Gator Run Friday Focus - October 30, 2015

Last Saturday a great group of educators from Gator Run participated in EdCampSoFlo, or EdCamp South Florida.  Edcamps are organic, participant-driven professional learning experiences
created by educators, for educators.  Basically educators who attend decide if they would like to lead a learning session or just be a participant.  We joined educators from across South FL at Pinecrest School in Fort Lauderdale.  It was an amazing day of learning that left me inspired and motivated to do even more for our students.  I am proud that Gator Run was well represented at this event.  A big shout-out to the following: Laura Pantin, Jessica Siegel, Tristan Hanley, Monica Dousdebes, Melissa Lopez, Jackie Sherman, Maite Hernandez, Angela Davis, Elayne Hollander and Cyndi Felton.  These ladies were active participants in the learning.  There will be another EdCamp coming in April.  More information to come!

Next Week at a Glance:

Gator Run Friday Focus - October 16, 2015

I am so excited that the District has decided to add teachers to our principal learning experiences this year.  All of the academic departments have coordinated training that will focus on early literacy and numeracy.  So each principal has a Kindergarten and a 1st grade teacher joining them for a 1/2 day once a month.  Crystal Coyle and Tristan Hanley will be participating for our school.   We visited Westwood Heights Elementary this past Tuesday.  We discussed how we are implementing the shifts in reading and math in our schools and we also visited several classrooms. The group will be meeting at Gator Run next month on November 3rd.  I will let you know which classrooms we will be visiting beforehand.

A special thanks to our 4th grade team for their efforts with our Student Council and to Coach Cliff for his work with our Safety Patrol.  Major kudos to Mrs. Bryce, Ms. Fanella, Mrs. Mitchel, and Mrs. Sherwood for their work in putting together the Induction Ceremony for our Student Council and Safety Patrol.  Our students felt important and our parents were very impressed.  Amazing stuff ladies!

If you haven't updated your hallway bulletin boards recently, please so so.  We always need current student work displayed.

Article of the Week - Formative, Summative, Interim: Putting Assessment in Context  My principal sub-cadre group is working on formative assessments as our learning focus for this year.  I think that this is a good article to ensure that we know which assessments should be used for each purpose.

Gator Run Friday Focus - October 9, 2015

As you know, I was out a few days this week in Orlando.  I am thrilled and humbled that I was chosen to participate in a second year of the State of Florida's Commissioner's Leadership Academy.  This year I will be a Facilitator in Training, with the goal that I might someday be able to train others in the feedback process that I shared with all of you during pre-planning week.  I will be visiting five schools throughout this year to practice my feedback skills.  I am hopeful that this will make me a better administrator and better able to help each of you become the best you can be.  I am happy that I will be working with a few of you in the upcoming weeks so that we will both become better in our roles and I hope that more of you will want to work collaboratively in this process.  It's all about feedback, support and growth.  This school is so big and sometimes people can feel isolated and in need of knowing how they are doing.  If you feel like you are in need of feedback, support or coaching, please reach out.  Mrs. Knapik, Ms. Sanchez, Ms. Felton and I are all here to support you in your goals.

Next Week at a Glance:
  • Team Leader Day next Tuesday.
  • PLCs are next Thursday at 2:15.
  • Boosterthon Fun Run next Friday!
Quote of the Week:  Here are two for you regarding feedback.  Feedback is crucial.

Gator Run Friday Focus - October 2, 2015

I am seeing a lot of great things with mathematics instruction these past few weeks.  Any time you can make math relevant and hands-on, you are helping our students connect with the content.  Visiting third grade classrooms has really been enlightening.  The data projects they are doing are awesome and I love what Ms. Dousdebes did with having groups of students create graphs using the floor tiles.  My lunch time conversations with students throughout the years provide me with insight into their thoughts on math.  Often it is not a favorite subject for them because as they tell me "I'm not good at math".  Now, obviously there are many individuals that will struggle with math.  However, we need to make math come alive if we are ever going to have hope to reach all of our students.  GoMath is simply a resource and not the only means that we have to teach the standards that we are responsible for.  I encourage you and your teams to determine how best to deliver the content that will ensure that our students meet the standards for your grade level.  Please do not teach solely from the Go Math series.  If you are struggling with teaching math and only teach math through the textbook, please seek out support from teammates or colleagues or me.  I would love to work with you to help make math come alive for our students.
Next Week at a Glance:
  • Boosterthon Pep Rally next Tuesday.  8:20 for Grades 3-5 and 9:05 for K - 2.
  • PLCs are scheduled for Thursday at 2:15.

Gator Run Friday Focus - September 25, 2015

Teachers, it is crucial that you are addressing student need via small group instruction.  With the various learning styles and ability levels of your students, you need to reach them this way.  We should be seeing small group instruction during literacy and math.  We definitely want students to work collaboratively and to grow independently.  However, they will not reach their potential nor will you truly be able to provide them what they need without small group instruction.  Please reach out to your teammates and/or Mrs. Knapik if you need assistance.

Next Week at a Glance:
  • Fall individual pictures will be taken on Monday and Tuesday.
  • There will be a Boosterthon Staff Meeting in the Media Center on Tuesday at 2:20.  This is a huge fundraiser for our PTA and teacher involvement and promotion is key.  This year we are raising funds for shade structures for our outdoor areas.
  • Our 1st School Advisory Council meeting of the year is Wednesday at 2:20 in the Media Center.

Gator Run Friday Focus - September 18, 2015

I wonder how we are doing with one of my "What ifs" from the beginning of the year -
“What if” – each of us started simply each day by greeting each other with a smile and by saying “Good Morning”?

Next Week at a Glance:
  • NESS Meeting on Monday at 2:15 in Shari Heyman's classroom.
  • No School on Wednesday for Yom Kippur.  Happy New Year to all who celebrate.

Quote of the Week:  "We see people and things not as they are, but as we are." - Anthony de Mello.  I had a few meetings with parents this week and I think of this quote often as I remember that we are all just people, even if our agendas are different.  I try (and often fail) to analyze my perceptions to ensure that I am truly listening to others and to understand where they are coming from.

Gator Run Friday Focus - September 11, 2015

I wanted to take a moment to address the lack of bells ringing in the school this year and to explain myself a little bit.  I have doing a lot of reading and having conversations with other educators on how we need to change what 'school' is and should be.  Most of us who have been through 'school' and worked in a school feel that it has to remain the same as it was when we grew up and how it has been for years.  I feel that some changes are in order.  It's quite amazing that it seems like the entire world has changed in the past decades, whether it is with technology or advancements in the medical field or simply with how we communicate with each other.  However, 'school' has not changed that much really in the past 50-60 years.  We have seen minimal progress but the concept of 'school' still remains the same in most people's minds.  Some concepts which need to be addressed are the concept of homework and its benefits or the idea that learning only takes place inside a school building.  (Regarding homework, I am not opposed to it as long as it is meaningful and part of the learning process.  I am against giving homework 'just because' or if it is busy work.  Make it meaningful or don't assign it.)  To me the most dangerous words in education are "That's the way we've always done it."  It's OK to challenge the way things are.
In the course of my reading and connecting, I heard about some principals who decided to turn off the bells in their schools.  The belief that children (or even we adults) need bells to signal when school starts and ends seems antiquated.  Turning the bells off removes some of the institutionalization of school.  There are no bells in real life, so what are we training our students for?
I know that I have many critics out there for this concept (and for some of my other ideas!).  Please know that anything that I do is because I care an awful lot about our students and am always willing to try new ideas out that will better their lives.  I also trust all of you to be innovative and to try new concepts out in the classroom so I hope that you will respect me when I want to try something new out as well.  I am sure that some out there believe that it isn't working, but I promise you that for every one who doubts this idea, there are others who are happy that the bells aren't ringing any more.  Remember that I am All In on you so please be All In on me.
If you still aren't convinced, here's a news article about some schools doing the same thing - No School Bells

Next Week at a Glance:

Gator Run Friday Focus - September 4, 2015

This has been an amazing first two weeks of school!  Thanks to each and every one of you for all you do to make our students feel welcomed and loved.  Let's keep it up.  Please help us out by making sure that the following happen:
  • Doors must be locked at all times.  Our students' safety and your own safety are paramount.
  • Please work with students to memorize their lunch numbers.  This will allow the cafeteria line to move more smoothly.
  • Make sure to have students use the restroom before lunch and specials.
All In:
Thank you to Lori Knapik and Stacy Morse for calling names in the car pools.  We are all sweating and struggling out there, but these two ladies are giving their all to help make sure that our dismissal goes smoothly.  Thank you Lori and Stacy for being #AllIn!

Next Week at a Glance:
  • No school on Monday.  Enjoy your holiday weekend!
  • Book fair kicks off.  I hope that most of you can join us for our Book Fair Night on Wednesday at 5:30.  Our students love nothing more than seeing their teacher at school events.
  •  PLCs are scheduled for Thursday at 2:30.

Gator Run Friday Focus - August 28, 2015

During last week's opening Faculty Focus kickoff meeting I shared the following graphic:

What have you done this week to make each of your students feel like your favorite student?  Have you only spoken positively about each of them?  Did you start making positive phone calls home yet?  Let's make sure that each child gets the champion they deserve.

Next Week at a Glance:
  • Open House next week: Tuesday for 3-5 and Wednesday for PK - 2.
  • PTA first General Meeting next Wednesday at 8:30 in the cafeteria.

Gator Run Friday Focus - August 21, 2015

Another year is upon us and I couldn't be more excited for our students to return.  This week with our teachers has been filled with positive energy and good spirits.  This promises to be an amazing school year.

I rolled out the following unofficial motto for our staff for this year - Feedback, Support and Growth.  My question to my staff is "What do you want to do and what do you need from us to make that happen?".  Our focus needs to be on the learning and teaching in the classroom above all else.  Teachers' roles are to make students' lives better.  Those of us in support positions are here to help make our teachers' lives better so that they can make students' lives better.

I also brought up some "What if" questions based on my summer reading and my interactions on Twitter.  Questions that I feel that if answered the right way, can take our school from very good to great.  These questions are not mandates.  However, just imagine the type of school we would have if we could make each of these a reality:
  • What if” – every teacher presented their best lesson on the first day of school and waited until the second day to discuss the rules?
  • “What if” – every teacher called the parents of each of their students within the first two weeks to say something positive about them?
  • What if” – each of us started simply each day by greeting each other with a smile and by saying “Good Morning”?
  • “What if” – every teacher identified areas where they wanted to grow and worked with an administrator or coach to improve in these areas?
  • “What if” – every student had the opportunity to direct a portion of their learning?
  • “What if” – every teacher used technology in the classroom to allow students the opportunity to create rather than consume?
FullSizeRender
Finally, our official motto this year is "All In".  When you play Texas Hold-Em Poker, there is a bet called "All In".  There are many ways that this bet can be used.  It can be because you only have a small stack of chips left and you are desperate.  You might also use it to try to convince your opponents that you have a great hand when you don't.  Finally, you can use this bet the way when you have confidence that you have the absolute best hand.  I truly believe that we have the best staff and that we are going to do amazing things together this year.  Please know that I am "All In" on each of you.  I want you to try new things without fear and with all of the feedback and support that you need to be successful.  Each staff member will receive a poker chip like the one above.  By accepting this chip, we are creating a bond that I am "All In" with you and that you will be "All In" with me and with each other.  This means that we uplift each other, only speak positively about our profession and each other, and agree to constantly learn, collaborate and try new things.  So please join me this year.  Let's be "All In" with each other.  Make this the best year ever!

Next Week at a Glance:
  • 1st Day of School Monday!  I cannot wait for the school year to begin.
  • We will be conducting our first fire drill on Wednesday at 8:30 followed immediately by a tornado drill.  Please make sure that you are familiar with the procedures for both.
  • Lice check on Thursday.  Cyndi will be sending out a schedule.
Quote of the Week:

Pretty simple really.  While we are making this the most awesome year ever, don't forget to take care of you.

Gator Run Friday Focus - May 29, 2015

It's hard to believe that next week is the last week of school again.  Don't forget those who aren't looking forward to summer, the students who need our love and support daily.  Enjoy each moment with your students!

A big kudos to Mrs. Beren for her work with our Robotics Team.  They participated in the Cypress Bay Zone Robotics Showcase this week.  The students had to have their robots dance and to do a search and rescue of our mascot, Swampy.  I am so thrilled for our students that get the opportunity to participate.  Great job Mrs. Beren!

Next Week at a Glance:

  • 5th grade promotion ceremonies are Monday and Tuesday morning in the cafeteria.
  • Next Thursday is the last day and an Early Release Day.  Report cards go home as well.

Quote of the Week: "Happiness is a choice, not a result.  Nothing will make you happy unless you choose to be happy." - Ralph Marsten.  There are many things in our lives that can cause us to be unhappy if we allow it.  Accept that which makes you unhappy, because it is a real emotion, but then move past it and choose happiness.  Your own health is on the line when you do not choose happiness.

Gator Run Friday Focus - May 22, 2015

So now that we have released the roster and map for next year, I wanted to talk to you a little bit about our plan going forward for next year and beyond.  The great thing is that this plan ties in with Broward County's announcement this week that we will be focusing on more than just one test score to determine who a child is.  I was lucky enough to be invited to Superintendent Runcie's press conference on Tuesday morning where he announced that third grade students will not have to wait until the Florida Standards Assessment results come in in order to determine whether they will be promoted to fourth grade.  With this week's announcement, third grade students can be promoted according to one out of a menu of different types of criteria, one of which is a student earning at least a "C" for each marking period.  This is beneficial because our students will not have to worry about the FSA results.  This is also a huge decision because it shows that Broward County Schools is ready to take the next step in lessening the impact of standardized testing on our lives.  Time will tell if this holds true, but I believe that this is the first step in a major revolution.
This connects to what we are going to do at Gator Run because we are going to refocus our priorities to what really matters at our school - what happens in the classrooms.  The classrooms are where the true work of the school takes place and where our attention needs to be.  We will not become the elite school that I know we can be if we do not shift our priority to teaching and learning.  When I say "we", I am referring to those of us in support positions in the school.  My belief is that our purpose in schools is to make students' lives better.  Our role as administrators and support staff is to make teachers' lives better so that they can make students' lives better.  So we will shift our focus away from those operational activities that can take up our time, but ultimately do not help us with our true purpose.  I am not saying that we won't be working on these operational tasks, but we will not make those the focus of what we do.  We will be prioritizing being in classrooms and working with teachers and students.
Next year we will have a second Assistant Principal.  This will allow all administrators to split up our operational tasks and be in classrooms on a regular basis.  Every classroom will receive regular visits so that we can identify amazing learning experiences, innovative strategies and areas where we need more support.  We want to celebrate success, share best practices, and provide assistance to those who need it.  This assistance will come from Mrs. Knapik and our ESOL Resource Teacher.  These individuals will observe teaching, provide feedback, model lessons, share resources, and coach those in need of support.  We will also have a second Guidance Counselor, Lindsay Weinstock.  Mrs. Powers and Ms. Weinstock will work together to ensure that our students' needs are met.  They will work with groups, meet with individual students and provide classroom lessons.  Through having two Guidance Counselors, we will be able to meet the demand of our population on a more regular basis.  While Mrs. Powers and Ms. Weinstock will work together to ensure that mandatory testing takes place, they will not place testing as the priority of their jobs.  Administration will provide support as necessary so that our Guidance Counselors can do what they do best, which is to meet the academic, social and personal needs of our students.  Administration and support staff will also continue to work on the RtI process, ensuring that students who needs additional support and interventions receive exactly what we can offer.
In summary, next year begins a time of great opportunity for Gator Run.  We will be focusing on feedback, support and growth.  This in turn will ensure that our students are always receiving the best education possible.  We will discuss this plan further at the beginning of the next school year.

Next Week at a Glance:
  • No school on Monday.  Enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend!
  • Report Cards are due to Team Leaders on Wednesday and to Ms. Felton on Friday.
  • Team Collaboration is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
  • 4th Quarter Honor Roll is Thursday at 8:15.
  • Pre-K Graduation is Friday at 8:30.
Quote of the Week - "You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage, pleasantly, smilingly, yet unapologetically, to say no to other things." - Buzz Williams.  In other words, that which you prioritize becomes the most important thing.  So when I say that what takes place in the classroom will be our highest priority, then that is the most important thing at Gator Run.  Testing, desk work, and other tasks that take away from our priority will be minimized as we move forward.

There is a video circulating the internet right now by John Oliver, who has been a contributor to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.  In this video John skewers standardized testing and the testing company Pearson in particular.  There is some questionable language that is bleeped out but I really think that you will love the relevance to our own frustrations.  Check it out when you get the chance - Watch John Oliver Explore Insanity of Standardized Testing

Quote of the Week - "To be happy, we seek something,.  But despite getting it, we are not happy.  All of one's life is spent preparing to be happy someday in the future.  It's like making a bed all night, but having no time to sleep.  How many minutes, hours and days have we spent our life being happy from within?  Those are the only moments you have really lived life.  There are two ways of looking at life. One is thinking that, “I’ll be happy after achieving a certain objective.” The second is saying that “I am happy come what may!” Which one do you want to live?" - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

The Mayonnaise Jar and Two Cups of Coffee

When things in your lives seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter.
He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.”
“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car.
The sand is everything else. The small stuff.”
“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life.
If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal.
Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked.
It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

Gator Run Friday Focus - April 24, 2015

What You Might Have Missed on Twitter this Week:

I still strongly believe in the power of Twitter as a means of educators throughout the world connecting and collaborating with each other.  I know that many of you find resources on Pinterest and Instagram.  I used Instagram myself to connect with our students and parents.  My thoughts are this: Pinterest and Instagram contain the "stuff", activities that are easy to learn and share; Twitter is the conversation about the "stuff", meaningful dialogue with fellow educators who are attempting new and innovative strategies in their schools and classrooms.  I have learned so much via Twitter that has completely changed my views on education and what we can do at Gator Run.  I hope that a few more of you will join us.

Blunt Educator is a great person to follow on Twitter.  He doesn't hold back and says it like it is.  Here's a recent quote from him - "If you think certain rules at school don't apply to you, don't get upset when students act like some of your rules don't apply to them."

Gator Run Friday Focus - April 17, 2015

I had a chance to work with my son, Maddox, on an assignment for his class.  He had a choice in what type of project to complete and Maddox chose to make a PowerPoint.  He has never worked in PowerPoint before so I showed him how to select a template and I modeled how to create his first slide, including how to highlight a portion of a word, finding an image online and inputting it into a slide.  During this time I resisted the urge to create more than the first slide for him.  I think it is our natural instinct as adults who have not grown up with technology to want to turn over power to our children.  We believe that they think like us and that technology is a separate part of their lives, when, in reality, technology is their life and there is no separation.  Within a span of five minutes, Maddox had learned how to create a basic PowerPoint presentation.  I share this with you to demonstrate that our students can do anything if we give them the opportunity.  Resist any fear you might have with using technology with your students.  Truthfully, they can all teach us something.  Remember, technology is life for them.
  • 5th grade is taking the ELA portion of the FSA next week.  Students take the ELA and Math assessments on their computers.  Half of the classes will take the assessment on Monday and Tuesday and the other half on Wednesday and Thursday.
  • NESS meeting on Monday at 2:15 in Mrs. Heyman's classroom.
  • Interim reports are due to Team Leaders on Tuesday and to Ms. Felton on Thursday.
  • PLCs are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
  • Kids of Character names are due to Ms. Felton by Wednesday.
  • Kindergarten Roundup is next Friday morning.
  • I hope that you can attend our first ever Multi-Cultural Festival next Friday night.  The parents who have created this event have put a lot of hard work into it.  I can't wait!
Quote of the Week - "For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again." - F. Scott Fitzgerald

What You Might Have Missed on Social Media this Week (Instagram and Twitter):

I saw a lot of learning about text features and text-based evidence this past week.  The great thing was seeing this happen throughout the grades.  As we begin to think about what our writing plan should be, let's begin by ensuring that K through 2 focus heavily on conventions.  Third grade needs to be writing actual essays with several paragraphs that includes indenting.  This will really help with where our students need to go in 4th and 5th grade.  Here are some examples of what I saw this week:

Ms. Siegel in 1st grade also invited me to her class for a Mystery Skype session.  We played a number guessing game where we practiced number sense with another class.  At the end of the session we found out the class was from Kansas!  Mystery Skype can also be used as a guessing game for geography for you to determine where the other class is located.  We will definitely be holding a Wired Up Wednesday session about this soon.

Next Week at a Glance:
  • NESS Meeting next Monday at 2:20 in Shari Heyman's classroom.
  • I appreciate those of you who have attended our Wired Up Wednesdays so far.  Thanks to Melissa Lopez for leading this past week's training on Class Dojo.  We understand that the timing on the same day as the FSA writing test might have prohibited some of you from attending.  Melissa will hold an alternate training sometime in the near future.
  • Team Collaboration is scheduled for next Wednesday afternoon.  Please remember that this is time to work on your lesson plans collaboratively.
  • Our Spring Book Fair kicks off next Wednesday.  I would appreciate anyone who can make it to our Evening Book Fair beginning at 5:30 on Wednesday.  Our students and parents love to see all of you at these type of events.  Thanks to those of you who volunteered to assist the PTA that night.

Gator Run Friday Focus - February 27, 2015

What You Might Have Missed this Week on Instagram:
Mr. Heyman's class using protractors to measure angles.

Wired Up Wednesday was a big success.  We had 12 of our Gator Run family members in attendance as Ms. Hollander demonstrated two websites with tools for teaching and learning.

Jump Rope for Heart was amazing.  Thanks to Coach Cliff for organizing this event and to the other Specials teachers for assisting and joining in the fun.

Next Week at a Glance:
  • We are hosting Clinical Education training next Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in Ms. Davis' classroom.
  • 4th and 5th grade will be taking the ELA Writing portion of the FSA next Wednesday.  Our teachers and students have been working hard all year and, while we know this is a different type of assessment than we have taken before, I feel extremely confident that our teachers have prepared our students for this challenge.  Way to go 4th and 5th grade teachers!
  • Team Collaboration is scheduled for next Wednesday afternoon.
Quote of the Week - "If plan "A" doesn't work, just remember: the alphabet has 25 more letters." - Anonymous.  Perseverance is a quality that we all need.  Let's teach our students that the struggle is what makes the reward worth it (and let's remember that for ourselves as well).

Gator Run Friday Focus - February 20, 2015

Thanks to Elayne Hollander for this week's first Wired-up Wednesday training.  Only a few teachers took advantage of this opportunity this week but I hear they learned a lot.  I encourage more of you to attend as we go forward and the topics become of interest to you. It's rare to have this type of professional development available at your own school. Take advantage!

Next week at a glance:
  • SAC meeting next Tuesday at 2:15.  We will be discussing the addition of a dual language program next year.
  • Next Wednesday at 2:15 is Team Collaboration.  Please work on your lesson plans.
  • There is an Early Release Day next Thursday.  There will be an FSA Writing training for 4th and 5th grade that afternoon.

Quote of the Week - "You don't win by being more average than other people in your industry.  You don't win by being more compliant than your fellow co-workers.  Being more obedient at what you do every day is not going to make you more indispensable.  What makes someone indispensable is that they do something that other people can't do.  We go to work every day trying to not do that.  We go to work trying to be just like everyone else, because that feels safe." - Seth Godin.  How do you make yourself indispensable?  Don't be boring, be awesome!

Gator Run Friday Focus - February 13, 2015

Each week a large number of our students suggest Wonders of the Week to me.  One of the main reasons that I am posting a weekly Wonder is to get our students thinking and coming up with their own questions.  These are questions that they should be answering for their own Genius Hour projects.  I am again imploring you to include Genius Hour in your classroom.  This is such a great way to get students excited about school and to become an expert in something that interests them.  I would love to visit your rooms when students are presenting.
  • No school Monday.
  • Team Leader Day on Tuesday.
  • Jump Rope for Heart on Wednesday.  Please refer to the email sent by Coach Cliff.
  • PLCs are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.  Please remember that this is time for your team to discuss the results of your most recent formative assessments.
  • PTA General Meeting on Thursday morning.  Our awesome chorus will be performing.
  • Kids of Character names are due to Ms. Felton on Friday.

Gator Run Friday Focus - February 6, 2015

I appreciate everyone's efforts this year to participate in meaningful PLCs centered on discussion of common formative assessment results.  I think that this video really showcases how beneficial learning and growing from common formative assessments can be - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FldnHUgjTcM (you will need to have your YouTube configuration set).
This is only the first year of this process for us and I know that we will grow and become a school that is a model for how PLCs should be run.  You are all part of an amazing faculty and I am so proud to work with each of you.  A true sign of a great teacher is one who continues to grow not because they have to, but because they want to become better for their students.
  • NESS Meeting Monday at 2:20 in Shari Heyman's classroom.
  • Principal's Honor Roll Breakfast Tuesday at 8:30.
  • Interim Reports go home on Tuesday.
  • Class pictures will take place next Wednesday through Friday.
  • Faculty Collaboration for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade only on Wednesday at 2:15 in the Media Center.  I have some information on the FSA that I will send out to those teachers beforehand for you to preview so that we can focus our time on a lively discussion.
Quote of the Week - Thanks to Carrie Velasquez for sharing this one with me!  I just had a discussion with one of our 5th graders about this very concept.

Gator Run Friday Focus - January 30, 2015

I mentioned previously this year that I am doing work with the Department of Education Commissioner's Leadership Academy.  Through this group I have been learning an instructional framework called the 5 Dimensions of Teaching and Learning.  This past week we visited Dillard 6 -12 and used the tool as we observed 4 different classrooms through the lens of determining the purpose of each lesson.  I think that the questions that we used to guide our walkthroughs really helped me focus on how important it is that each of our lessons have a purpose that is clearly communicated to our students, that our students know how they will demonstrate mastery, and how what we are doing is related beyond the classroom.  Here are a few of the guiding questions that we used, as I think they can help all of us as we are planning learning experiences for our students.
  • What is the learning target(s) of the lesson?  How is it meaningful and relevant beyond the specific task/activity?
  • How are the standard(s) and learning target communicated and made accessible to all students?
  • How does the learning target clearly communicate what students will know and be able to do as a result of the lesson?  What will be acceptable evidence of student learning?
    •  Our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be taking the BAFS (Broward Assessment of Florida Standards) next week.  Ms. Felton will send out a schedule today.
    • Interims are due to Team Leaders next Monday and to Ms. Felton on Wednesday.
    • Team Collaboration is scheduled for next Wednesday.
Quote of the Week - So, the several members of the 2nd grade team went to dinner recently and they brought me back fortunes from their fortune cookies.  Here's a good one from those - "Don't pursue happiness - create it."
